Health cover on a UAE work visa usually tracks sponsorship, not the last working day, so a resignation and a start date that look tidy on paper can still leave a gap the electronic permit check is built to catch. Close the gap by lining up three dates: when the old policy actually ends, when the new employer’s policy will be issued (not merely quoted), and when the old visa is cancelled. If those dates do not meet, you need a locally approved bridge — travel insurance is not that bridge. The documents and the sequence are below; the cost of getting it wrong is on what a lapse does.
When Does the Old Policy Actually End?
Ask HR or the broker of record for the cancellation date in writing. Cover often ends with visa cancellation or a stated end-of-sponsorship date, not with your last day in the office. Leave-encashment weeks, garden leave and a later visa-cancel appointment can sit on either side of that date. Guessing from the employment contract is how people attend a clinic between two policies.
If you are also transferring a visa rather than cancelling and starting again, still ask. Transfers have their own window, and membership endorsements are not automatic just because the labour file moved.
What Does the New Employer Have to Have Issued?
An in-force policy that the electronic check can see. A quotation, a “we have started the file” email, or a draft table of benefits is not issuance. The MoHRE health insurance check looks for matching member data on a live plan. Names, passport numbers and start dates have to match the permit file.
Ask the new HR team, in writing: the insurer name, the expected issuance date, and whether dependants are on the same endorsement. If their answer is later than your old cancellation date, you have a gap to close before anyone books a visa appointment.
What Can Bridge the Dates If They Do Not Meet?
A short individual plan that meets the local minimum for the emirate issuing the residence. Confirm it is a locally approved resident product, not a visitor or travel policy. Travel cover is built for emergencies away from home; it is the product residence channels most often refuse. Self-sponsored and freelance routes use the same test: self-sponsored health insurance.
If the new employer will add you in a few days, a bridge still has to be in force on the days in between. Back-dating is not something to rely on. Treatment in a gap is self-pay, and a later restart can reset waiting periods that the old plan had already served.
How Do You Change Jobs Without a Health-Cover Gap?
Six steps, in the order they actually unlock each other.
- Confirm when the current policy actually ends. Ask HR or the broker for the cancellation date in writing. Cover often tracks visa cancellation, not the last working day, and those dates are not always the same.
- Ask the new employer when their policy will be issued. A quotation is not issuance. Electronic work-permit and visa checks look for an in-force policy, not a draft.
- If the dates do not meet, arrange a bridge. A short individual plan that meets the local minimum can cover the gap. Travel insurance does not. Confirm the product is locally approved before you rely on it for a permit file.
- Request a continuity certificate from the outgoing insurer. It records that cover was in force without a break up to the cancellation date. The new insurer may use it to honour waiting periods that had already been served. The HowTo for the letter is continuity certificates when switching.
- Do not cancel the old visa until the new cover is live. A cancelled visa with no active policy is the gap the electronic check is built to catch. Sequence the paperwork, not the other way around.
- Verify the new card before the first clinic visit. Member data, network and the effective date have to match what the insurer holds. Carry the certificate and the new schedule until the card is in hand.
What Happens to Dependants Mid-Move?
They are often cancelled when the employee’s membership ends, even if the family is still in the country waiting for the new residence step. Ask both employers who is on which endorsement, and from which date. A spouse still on the old card after the employee has been cancelled is a membership error, not extra cover you can rely on. If you need to add a spouse or child on the new plan, treat it as a new endorsement with its own issuance date, not as something that follows automatically.
Maternity and chronic waiting periods are the benefits most damaged by a gap. If a pregnancy is already in flight, get the continuity position in writing before you resign. Continuity is never automatic.
What This Page Cannot Tell You
The cancellation date on your specific file, whether a named individual plan will pass a permit check this week, or whether the new insurer will honour waiting periods. Those answers sit with the two employers, the two insurers, and the authority running the visa or permit channel. This site does not place cover or process visa files.
What This Site Will Not Do
Insure With Sajad is an educational guidance service. It does not sell, place or quote insurance, does not recommend or rank insurers, brokers or third-party administrators, and cannot confirm whether a specific plan, complaint or visa file will succeed.
