Freelance, Golden Visa and Self-Sponsored Health Cover in the UAE
When there is no employer, the health insurance obligation does not disappear. It moves to you.
If no employer sponsors your residence, you arrange your own health cover, and it has to meet the minimum set by the emirate that issues your visa. That is why travel insurance and some international policies get rejected: they are not approved products for the local requirement. Freelance permit holders, Golden Visa holders, business owners on their own establishment and family-sponsored residents are all in this position.
Who Counts as Self-Sponsored?
Different routes, same practical outcome for health cover.
Different routes
-
operating under a permit from a free zone or authority rather than an employer.
-
Golden Visa holders
whose residence is not tied to a company sponsor. -
Business owners
sponsored by their own company or sole establishment, where there is nobody else to arrange it. -
Investor and property-linked residents
depending on the route. -
Family-sponsored adults
whose sponsor is a spouse or parent rather than an employer.
Why Do Travel and International Plans Get Rejected?
Because they are built for a different job.

How Do You Move Off an Employer Plan Without a Gap?
The transition is where most self-sponsored residents lose continuity.
lose continuity
end of sponsorship not your last working day
-
Find the exact date
your employer cover ends. It is usually tied to the end of sponsorship, not your last working day. -
Request a continuity certificate
from the outgoing insurer before that date. -
Apply early enough
that the new policy starts on or before the old one ends. -
Declare fully
on the medical application form, including anything treated under the employer plan. -
Get continuity confirmed in writing
on the new policy, so served waiting periods are credited. -
Diarise the renewal
against your visa expiry so the two never drift apart.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Residents need health cover meeting the minimum set by the emirate that issues the visa, and where no employer sponsors you, arranging it is your responsibility. Confirm the current requirement with the health authority for that emirate.
Generally no. Travel policies are built for short trips and emergencies, usually exclude routine and chronic care, and are not approved products for the residency health requirement. A locally approved resident plan is what the requirement contemplates.
No. A Golden Visa is a residency route, not a health plan. Holders arrange their own cover meeting the applicable minimum for the emirate issuing the visa.
Only if the insurer and the product are approved locally for the emirate concerned. Some international plans qualify and some do not. Ask the insurer to confirm approval in writing well before a visa step depends on it.
Find the exact date employer cover ends, request a continuity certificate before it does, and arrange the new policy to start on or before that date. A break can restart waiting periods for maternity, chronic and pre-existing conditions.
